Did you know that our cocoa farmers plant precious woods such as mahogany between the cocoa plants in order to secure their pension later on?

Because cacao trees originally occur in the understory of tropical rainforests, they feel particularly comfortable under tall trees. To ensure that this is also the case in our agroforestry systems, we have planted up to 70 different native species of such shade trees – and they are worth a story of their own.

In the agroforestry systems, we have given the endangered Andean walnut(Juglans neotropica) a home again, as well as the valuable American mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), the particularly light balsa wood(Ochroma pyramidale) or the Cedrela amarillo, which is particularly imposing with its board roots.
